Richard B. Lumley is an attorney in the firm’s Business Litigation and Dispute Resolution practice group.  His practice focuses on representing businesses and individuals in complex commercial, trust and estate, real estate, and marine related disputes in state and federal court.

Richard has in-depth experience representing clients in a range of civil matters throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He is dedicated to understanding his client’s goals and addressing their needs as effectively and efficiently as possible. Richard values the importance of working with clients as their matters evolve and is committed to formulating sophisticated strategies for both litigation and dispute avoidance.

Prior to his litigation practice, Richard was an honors fellow at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, D.C., focusing on federal ethics and political activities law.

Richard attended Northeastern University School of Law, where he was a public interest law scholar. As a student, he completed full-time internships for the Hon. Marianne B. Bowler at the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts in Boston; Northeastern University’s Office of General Counsel; a leading New Hampshire law firm; and the Massachusetts Development Finance Agency. Richard also served on the law school’s Admissions Committee and as a staff member of the Northeastern University Law Journal.

Before law school, Richard directed domestic and international service-immersion programs for undergraduates at Santa Clara University (his alma mater) and Providence College.

Experience

  • Drafting and strategic analysis of pleadings, dispositive motions, and written discovery in federal and state court.
  • Represent high-level fiduciaries in navigating sensitive trust administration issues, both from behind the scenes and in Court.
  • Represented a national marine transportation company in securing full recovery on $90,000 breach of contract claim brought in Massachusetts Superior Court.
  • Obtained dismissal of asbestos-related claims brought in Rhode Island Superior Court against leading manufacturer of industrial brake products.
  • Served as second-chair in successful trial defense of restaurant company for commercial eviction.
  • Represented prominent New England supplier of heavy equipment and power systems in obtaining repossession of property and achieving a stipulated judgment on six-figure breach of contract claim brought in federal court.
  • Represented former public official in successfully resolving dispute with the Rhode Island Ethics Commission involving challenge to agency’s interpretation of its rulemaking authority.
  • Advised U.S. Environmental Protection Agency employees on compliance with federal ethics and political activities laws through individual counseling and written guidance.
