Burns helped Big Y Foods, a Springfield, MA-based family-owned grocery store chain, navigate complicated real estate, leasing, zoning and signage issues in its acquisition of eight stores from Hannaford, which were sold off as part of the merger of Hannaford and Stop & Shop.

As the deal was closing, the signage requirements changed at one store site, resulting in Big Y Foods not being able to put its own sign on the store – even though it was already operating the supermarket. Through some creative and strategic negotiation with the town’s counsel, whom one of the B&L attorneys knew through a professional association, Big Y Foods got its sign permit in record time.  We continue to advise and counsel Big Y Foods as it continues to grow its New England footprint.
